Importance of Pesantren Values

The existence of various problems in the country such as moral decadence, a number of violent acts, terrorism and religious radicalism, immorality by students, less-religious tolerance, and the spread of still corrupt practices by the government officials all have showed that the situation in the country today requires a lot of improvement relating to human qualities.

The presence of good character among societies may lead to the social order of peace and prosperity that can be possibly realized. In such terrible situation, the country needs for the development and establishment of a nation with the character of integrity, nationalism and strong spirit in developing the country. At the same time, the society is hopefully able to build harmony among people and different communities. 

Based on this situation, the country seems to require the concept of pesantren (Islamic boarding school) values ​​to be one of the important alternatives in this development effort. In the Institute of Pesantren Mathali'ul Falah, the values ​​of pesantren are termed as “Nine Plus One” because the total number of values are nine, plus one value as the complementary existence. 

Practically, these values can be the real solution in building the character and mentality of the nation. However, such set of values would not become a final product to represent the value of pesantren in Indonesia, rather it is only as an angler so that the values ​​of other pesantrens in the country could be well defined and so can be adopted and applied in the administration of education in Indonesia.
